ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The seventh-seeded University of Iowa women’s tennis team fell to 10th-seeded Penn State, 4-3, on Thursday afternoon in the Second Round of the Big Ten Tournament at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Iowa came out strong, capturing the doubles point with the help of court one and three.
At the top spot, sophomore Daianne Hayashida and senior Vipasha Mehra defeated Sofiya Chekhylstova and Olivia Dorner, 6-2. Junior Barbora Pokorna and sophomore Pia Kranholdt tied the match at the No. 2 spot before falling to Jordina Cegarra and Alina Lebedeva, 6-3.
Junior Marisa Schmidt and Nikita finished the job on court three, downing Yvonne Zuffova and Karly Firedland, 7-5.
The Hawkeyes posted singles wins at the No. 2 and No. 6 spots.
Schmidt captured the first win, defeating Zuffova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Vishwase ended the day by downing Lebedeva, 6-2, 5-6, 6-4.
The Nittany Lions earned four singles wins at No. 1, 3, 4 and 5.
