CARY, N.C. – Four University of Iowa women’s tennis student-athletes will compete at the ITA Women’s All-American Championships, beginning Saturday, at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.
Seniors Marisa Schmidt and Barbora Pokorna and junior Tereza Dejnozkova will compete in the pre-qualifying draw in singles. Junior Daianne Hayashida will play in the singles qualifying draw, while teaming up with Schmidt in the prequalifying doubles draw.
“We are excited to start this tennis season off by competing in the All-American Championships,” said Boros-Schmid. “It’s a great, prestigious national tournament that is a qualifier to our NCAA singles and doubles championship later this fall. It’s the first time we’ve ever had four players competing in this draw, so we are so proud of the group. Every match is competitive and every player at this tournament is elite, so it’s a great experience and we can’t wait to get back on the court and compete as Hawkeyes.”
Pokorna, Schmidt and Dejnovzkova will open the tournament Saturday in the Round of 128. Pokorna will face Texas’ Carmen Andreea Herea at 8 a.m. (CT), Schmidt will square off against Baylor’s Na Dong at 10 a.m. and Dejnovzkova will face Texas’ Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo at 11:30 a.m.
In doubles, Schmidt and Hayashida will meet Wake Forest’s Anna Zhang and Whitley Pate at 3 p.m.
Hayashida will begin her singles run Monday.
