IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball defeated Mount Mercy, 21-2, on Saturday at Pearl Field in a 9-inning exhibition.
The Hawkeyes used four different arms in the game. Sophomore Andrea Jaskowiak got the start and went three innings and allowed one run on two hits. Devyn Greer and Jalen Adam each threw two scoreless innings in relief. Senior Haley Downe threw the final two innings and retired the Mustangs in order in the final frame.
The Hawkeye bats came out hot as they plated two runs in the bottom of the first on RBIs from Soo-Jin Berry and Desiree Rivera. The Mustangs got one back in the second to cut the Iowa lead to one. Iowa got the run back in the home half of the inning on RBI from Jena Young to extend the lead, 3-1.
Iowa’s offense kept things going in the fourth as its lead was extended to 10, scoring eight runs on six hits and two Mustang Errors. The Hawkeyes plated 10 runs combined in the sixth and seventh including a two-run home run off the bat of junior Avery Jackson to make it a, 21-1, Hawkeye lead.
Iowa finished the game with 21 runs on 24 hits and five Mount Mercy errors.
The Hawkeyes return to action on Sunday, September 22 as they host DMACC at Bob Pearl Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
