IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Mississauga, 19-0, in 14 innings at Duane Banks Field on Friday evening.
The Hawkeye offense totaled 16 hits, including six doubles, against the Tigers. An RBI infield single from Andy Nelson put the Hawkeyes on the board in the bottom of the third inning. The Hawkeyes then plated three in the sixth frame after Miles Risley scored on an RBI SAC fly and a Mississauga error gave Iowa two more runs.
Mitch Wood went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a three-run blast to left field and an RBI double.
Merrick Mathew’s RBI single in the 10th frame gave Iowa a 9-0 lead. The Hawkeyes put the game out of reach for the Tigers in the 11th, scoring seven runs on two hits. The inning was highlighted by a Daniel Rogers SAC fly, Jackson Beaman RBI groundout, and Tyler Guerin RBI single.
Eleven different Iowa pitchers saw the mound on Friday, combining for 24 strikeouts and giving up just three hits and one walk. Out of Iowa’s 185 total pitches, 129 were called strikes.
Cade Obermueller started on the mound for the Hawkeyes and struck out five over two innings of work. Reece Beuter followed with two scoreless innings on the mound, retiring six straight Mississauga hitters. Solid pitching continued for the Hawkeyes with freshmen Jaron Bleeker and Tyler Guerin, who each retired the side in order in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively.
Sam Hart retired three more Tigers in the ninth, and Elliot Cadieux-Lanoue struck out two in the 10th frame. Justin Hackett pitched a solid 1-2-3 inning in the 11th, followed by two strikeouts from Chas Wheatley in the 12th inning. Will Pearson and Liam Roche completed the Hawkeye shutout in the 13th and 14th innings, respectively, combining for three punch outs.
