Champions! Iowa Wins Diane Thomason Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s golf team claimed the team title at the Diane Thomason Invitational presented by Scheels, firing a 54-hole total of 906 (288-299-319). It is the program’s first team title since 2021.

The Hawkeyes’ last team win came at the UNI Invitational in Cedar Falls in 2021, while the team’s last fall title came in 2018 at the Diane Thomason Invitational.

Senior Paula Miranda led the team, finishing as the co-runner-up with a 54-hole total of 222 (72-71-79). It ties the best finish of her career, as she tied for second at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in 2021.

“It was so nice to play at home for our home crowd and have everyone out here to support us,” said Miranda. “It was special to be able to play Finkbine in a tournament my senior year.

“This win was good for us, but there are still things for us to work on. This is just baby steps toward where we want to be.”

The Hawkeyes concluded the tournament with five players in the top 20. Junior Kaitlyn Hanna tied for 13th with a 229 (75-75-79), while sophomores Maura Peters and Ximena Benites tied for 16th with 230s.

Peters had the best finish of her career, while carding a career bests round (69) and 54-hole total (230).

Junior Riley Lewis, who was playing as an individual, tied for 19th with a 231 (73-74-84).

Montana State Becca Tschetter was the individual medalist, firing a three-over par 219.

QUOTING HEAD COACH MEGAN MENZEL
“It was the goal to get the win on our home course, and it feels really good to walk away with a win. “It was a special few days. We have great fans, staff, helpers and volunteers. We love this facility and this really is a special place.

“It was a team effort to come in first, Maura really did something special, carding a 69, personal best, yesterday. Paula’s always right up there as a lead scorer, Shannyn and Kaitlyn played well, we really played as a team.”
