IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team took down Iowa Western, 15-2, in 14 innings at Duane Banks Field on Friday evening.
Cade Obermueller got the start on the mound against the Reivers. With two outs, the left-hander gave up a double off the right field wall but responded with a strikeout to strand the runner. Obermueller threw a clean second inning to polish off his third start this fall.
Anthony Watts took over the bump in the third inning and didn’t allow a runner to get on base. Brant Hogue kept the Reivers scoreless in the fourth inning, and Aaron Savary did the same in the fifth. Combined efforts from Reece Beuter, Tyler Guerin, Ben DeTaeye, Jaron Bleeker, Elliot Cadieux-Lanoue, Daniel Wright, Chas Wheatley helped shutout Iowa Western through the 13th inning. Liam Roche came in to pitch in the 14th, and the Reivers scored two runs. The Iowa pitching staff struck out 23 batters.
Iowa opened up the scoring in the first frame as Daniel Rogers’ line drive single up the middle brought home Ben Wilmes and Gable Mitchell, who each walked to get on base. The Hawkeyes tacked on another run in the second inning when Mitchell hit a RBI fielder’s choice. The offense scored four more runs in the third frame, highlighted by a single from Caleb Wulf and a double down the left field line from Kooper Schulte.
Reese Moore started off the fifth inning with a base hit and Wulf followed with a bunt single. Moore ended up scoring on a throwing error, and then Schulte continued his strong day at the plate with an RBI single to put the Hawkeyes up, 9-0.
Jackson Beaman joined the stat sheet with an RBI single in the seventh frame. Then, back-to-back bases loaded walks from Connor Hennings and Jaylen Ziegler plated Iowa’s 11th and 12th runs. The Hawkeyes’ next runs came in the 13th inning when Cash Campbell hit an RBI single to right field. To cap off the night, Jackson Beaman hit a two-run bomb to straightaway center field. The Hawkeye offense totaled 17 hits compared to the Reiver’s five.
