No. 12 Iowa Falls to Monmouth in Shootout

IOWA CITY, IOWA – The 12th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team fell against Monmouth, 2-1 (4-3 S/O), on Sunday at Grant Field.

Monmouth struck first, scoring at 14:15 in the first quarter. The Hawkeyes answered back with a goal in the second quarter at 19:23 from Dionne van Aalsum off a penalty corner assisted by Rachel Herbine and Annika Herbine.

The teams remained tied for the third and fourth quarters, as well as first and second overtime, resulting in a shootout.

In the shootout, Monmouth found the back of the net first. A. Herbine then attempted for Iowa with no success. Monmouth missed their second shot, and Ella Wareham found the back of the net on Iowa’s second shot, tying things up, 1-1. Monmouth missed their next shot, and van Aalsum found the back of the net to make things, 2-1. Monmouth made their next attempt to even the score. Lieve van Kessel missed a shot, Monmouth missed a shot, and then Alex Wesneski missed her shot.

Things were still tied until van Aalsum secured a goal on her next shot. Monmouth answered back immediately with things tied, 3-3. Wareham missed her next shot, and so did Monmouth. A. Herbine missed her next shot, and Monmouth missed again as well. It was then van Kessel’s turn, her shot was unable to find the back of the net. Monmouth’s Sofia Fouces made her next attempt to secure the game for Monmouth.

Monmouth outshot Iowa, 15-to-14. Mia Magnotta had eight saves for Iowa.

The Hawkeyes host two games at Grant Field next weekend. First Iowa plays UC Davis on Friday at 3 p.m. for Senior Day. The Hawkeyes then face Cal on Sunday at noon.
