No. 17 Iowa Defeats No. 18 Cal

IOWA CITY, IOWA – The 17th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team defeated No. 18 Cal, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Grant Field.

“Cal’s a fantastic team, they have a lot of dangerous weapons,” said head coach Lisa Cellucci. “First and foremost, I thought our collective team defense was a lot better. It was a goal to deny penalty corners which we did to them, when we had to actually defend a corner we did a great job- some great saves by Harper and some great saves by Mia. We feel really good about putting a neutral game weekend together that was much needed for us as we go into the final stretch of our regular season. I’m really proud of the girls.”

The Hawkeyes were first on the board with Dionne van Aalsum‘s goal on a penalty corner at 2:38 in the first quarter, assisted by Rachel Herbine and Annika Herbine.

Both teams scored in the second quarter. First came Cal’s goal at 26:24, followed by van Aalsum’s second goal of the game at 29:08, again off a corner this time assisted by Jacey Wittel and R. Herbine.

The third quarter was scoreless for both teams. The Hawkeyes extended their lead in the fourth with an unassisted goal at 49:30 off the stick of Gia Whalen.

Cal outshot Iowa, 14-to-13 and both teams had three penalty corners. Mia Magnotta had seven saves for Iowa.
