No. 16 Iowa Falls to Michigan State

EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN – The 16th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team fell to Michigan State in overtime, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Ralph Young Field.

The first half was scoreless for both teams.

The Spartans were the first on the board, scoring in the third quarter at 40:14.

The Hawkeyes tied things up with a goal from Lieve van Kessel in the fourth quarter at 57:48, assisted by Dionne van Aalsum.

A penalty corner was called before the end of regulation, which resulted in five consecutive penalty corners for the Hawkeyes.

After failing to convert on the penalty corners, the game went into overtime.

At 65:38 in overtime, Michigan State scored the game winning goal on a corner attempt of its own.

Iowa outshot Michigan State, 20-to-17. Michigan State had 13 corners to Iowa’s 12. Mia Magnotta had two saves for Iowa.
