NAPERVILLE, Ill. — The University of Iowa women’s wrestling team earned six top-three finishes on Sunday at the NCC Open. Three Hawkeyes won individual titles, including Nanea Estrella (138 lbs), Macey Kilty (145 lbs) and Kylie Welker (180 lbs).
After receiving a first-round bye at 103 pounds, top-ranked Rianne Murphy pinned Zoe Omura of Midland University in 2:30. She then earned two ranked wins, beating No. 9 Mia Zuniga of King University and pinning No. 6 Odelia Lopez of Schreiner University to reach the finals. Murphy lost, 13-2, in the title match to Erin Hikiji of Providence in the finals.
Freshmen Valarie Solorio placed third at 110 pounds. After falling in the quarterfinals, Solorio rattled off three straight wins in the consolation bracket to finish the day strong.
Estrella received a first-round bye. She pinned Celeste Detoles of Aurora in 1:17 in her first match before beating Madeline Barton of Quincy, 11-0. She defeated Haylie Jaffe, 8-0, in the semifinals and Skylar Hattendorf, 3-0, to win the 138-pound title.
Kilty also received a first-round bye. She recorded two technical falls to reach the semifinals, beating Sariah Zepeda of Southern Oregon, 12-1, and Savannah Gomez of McKendree, 10-0. Kilty defeated Valerie Hamilton, 10-0, in the semifinals and Alara Boyd, 8-0, to claim first place at 145 pounds.
Welker dominated at 180 pounds winning each of her six matches by tech. fall. Two of those wins came against ranked, including No. 3 Madison Sandquist from Sacred Heart in the semis and #7 Brittyn Corbishley from North Central in the title match.
Sophomore Alivia White had a second place finish at 207 pounds. After pinning fellow Hawkeye teammate Katja Osteen in 1:05 in the semis, White fell, 3-0, to third-ranked Sara Lake of Lindenwood University.
The other Hawkeyes who placed include Cali Leng (124, 6th), Emmily Patneaud (131, 6th), Danni Swihart (138, 5th), White (207, 2nd) and Osteen (207, 5th).
NOTABLES
- Kylie Welker had the most tech falls (6) in the least amount of time (8:31) in the tournament.
- Kylie Welker scored the most team points with 26.
