IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s basketball team defeated Purdue, 84-63, in its Big Ten home opener on Sunday afternoon inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes improved their record to 11-2.
Senior Addi O'Grady led the team with 12 points and three rebounds and junior Hannah Stuelke contributed with nine points and six rebounds. Sydney Affolter showcased her all-around game with nine points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Additionally, freshman Ava Heiden added a near double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
In the first quarter, Iowa came out strong offensively, leading Purdue, 27-13 by the end of the period. The Hawkeyes shot 66.7% from the field, with Olsen scoring six points and Stremlow contributing five points and two assists. Iowa also dominated the boards, out-rebounding Purdue, 12-6. The Hawkeyes ended the quarter on an 11-2 scoring run.
In the second quarter, Iowa extended their lead to 50-32 by halftime. Although Purdue managed to close the gap to within six points with an 11-3 run to start the quarter. Iowa pulled away again, led by Guyton's seven points, including a three-pointer and a layup. Affolter added five points and three rebounds, helping Iowa finish the half on a 15-3 run.
Purdue came out firing early in the period cutting Iowa's lead to just eight. However, Iowa responded led by O'Grady and Stuelke, who combined for 11 points in the quarter. Heading into the final quarter, Feuerbach capped the quarter with a three-pointer to maintain a comfortable lead, 66-47.
The final quarter Iowa sealed the victory with an 18-16 edge over Purdue. The Hawkeye bench played a significant role, contributing 15 points to give Iowa its largest lead of the game was 27 points, achieved late in the fourth quarter, ensuring a 84-63 win.
