Tran Impresses Against Buckeyes, Hawkeyes Fall to No. 9 Ohio State

The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics fell to No. 9 Ohio State in its Big Ten opener on Saturday evening in the Covelli Center, 196.275-195.200.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics fell to No. 9 Ohio State in its Big Ten opener on Saturday evening in the Covelli Center, 196.275-195.200.

Freshman Aurélie Tran delivered Iowa's highlight of the night with a 9.900 on bars—the first 9.900 of the season for the GymHawks—earning second-place in the event. Tran took second in the all-around scoring a 39.350. Iowa also saw strong performances on vault from juniors Hanna Castillo and Karina Muñoz who posted a 9.850 and 9.875, respectively.

BARS
The GymHawks opened the meet with a team score of 48.925 on bars. Tran led the rotation with her standout 9.900 performance, securing second-place overall. Senior Ilka Juk and freshman Sydney Turner each contributed 9.800's to tie for third on the event. Muñoz added a solid 9.725, and junior Gianna Masella contributed a 9.700.

VAULT
Iowa recorded a season-high 49.125 on vault during the second rotation. Muñoz anchored the lineup with a strong  9.875 to take second place, while Castillo set a career-high with a 9.850. Tran followed with a 9.825, and sophomore Eva Volpe and junior Avery Chambers added scores of 9.800 and 9.775, respectively.

FLOOR
The GymHawks earned a 48.875 on floor, highlighted by sophomore Emily Erb’s team-leading 9.875 in the anchor position, which tied for third-place overall. Castillo followed suit with a strong 9.850, and Tran added consistency with a 9.775. Senior Haley Tyson posted a 9.700, and Volpe rounded out the lineup with a 9.675. The GymHawks led the Buckeyes after three rotations. 

BEAM
Iowa closed the meet on beam, tallying a team score of 48.275. Tran and freshmen Cassie Lee each scored 9.850 tying for third on the day. Volpe and Tyson both contributed 9.775s, while Juk and Muñoz scored 9.025 and 8.950, respectively.

UP NEXT
The GymHawks will return to Iowa City for their home opener on Sunday, Jan. 26, against Minnesota. The meet will begin at 2:00 p.m. CT inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena and will be streamed live on B1G+ (subscription required).
