Iowa Blanks Illinois State in Season Opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa women’s tennis team swept Illinois State, 7-0, in dominant fashion in its season opener Monday at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex.

The Hawkeyes set the tone early by capturing the doubles point, with victories on courts one and two.

On court two, Daianne Hayashida and Nikita Vishwase were the first to secure a win, defeating Emma Lindh and Elena Jankulovska of Illionis State, 6-2. Tereza Dejnozkova and Barbora Pokorna followed on court one, clinching the doubles point with a 7-5 win over Lana Caculovic and Silvia Pomarolli. On court three, Marisa Schmidt and Pia Kranholdt eged Zoe Limparis and Sophie Marie Lowe, 7-6 (5) to complete the doubles sweep. 

Iowa carried the momentum into singles play, where the team posted straight-set victories across all six courts.

Schmidt made quick work of Lindh to start off singles action at No. 3, cruising to a 6-3, 6-0 win. No. 75-ranked Dejnozkova added another win at No. 2, defeating Pomarolli 6-3, 6-2. No. 89-ranked Hayashida clinched the dual with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Caculovic at the No. 1 spot.

Pokorna also came out on top with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Lowe, Kranholdt posted a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win over Jankulovska at No. 5 and Vishwase topped Nuria Sanz at No. 4, 6-3, 7-5 to round out the clean sweep.

“It was good to get the season started today. The team has worked really hard in preseason, and I know they were really anxious to get a match underneath their belts. It was a great chance to get back to competing and I think we learned a lot from doubles and singles today. We have a couple of days to regroup and get ready for a competitive Kentucky match at home on Friday.”
