IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Iowa State in an Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series contest on Wednesday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.
Iowa State (3-1) claimed the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. The Hawkeye pair of Marisa Schmidt and Pia Kranholdt earned Iowa’s lone doubles victory, downing Suzanie Pretorius and Valeska San Martin Ramirez, 6-4, at the three line.
In singles action, Iowa (2-2) rallied with strong performances from several players. Senior Barbora Pokorna continued her dominant play, defeating Valeska San Martin Ramirez, 6-1, 6-3, on court five. No. 76 Tereza Dejnozkova followed suit with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Julia Camblor on court two.
After Iowa suffered defeats on courts one and four, Kranholdt notched Iowa’s third point with a 7-6, 6-4 win on court six over Gabriela Felix.
Schmidt fought in the deciding match but came up short in a three-set tiebreaker against Cristina Ramos Sierra, falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-7.
