Iowa Ties for 8th at Briars Creek Invitational

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – The University of Iowa women’s golf team shot a five-over par 293 during the final round of the Briars Creek Invitational on Tuesday at the Golf Club of Briars Creek.   The Hawkeyes finished in a three-way tie for eighth place with a 36-hole total of 590 (297-293).

The tournament was shortened to 36 holes after Monday rain washed out play on. 

Senior Paula Miranda and sophomore Ximena Benites led the way as both players tied for 17th on the individual leaderboard with one-over par 145s.  It was Benites’ team-leading fifth top-20 finish, while it was Miranda’s fourth this season. 

Miranda finished Tuesday’s round in the red, as she carded a one-under par 71.   She had all three of her birdies on the front nine and had only two bogeys during the round.  The Mexico native has a team-best seven rounds at or below par this season. 

After firing a one-under par 71 in her opening round, Benites finished with a two-over par 74 on Tuesday.  She had five birdies during the round. 

The other three Hawkeyes in the tournament – Riley Lewis, Maura Peters and Lily Huether – each posted their best round of the tournament on Tuesday. 

Florida State took home the team title, finishing with a nine-under par 567, 14 shots ahead of second place Purdue. The Seminoles’ Mirabel Ting was the individual medalist, carding an 11-under par (133).
