BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Iowa softball team defeated Indiana, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon at Andy Mohr Field, and completed a sweep of the two game series.

Freshman Talia Tretton (5-3) got the start for Iowa. Tretton pitched 4 and 2/3 innings before junior Jalen Adams came in for 2 and 1/3 innings of relief. Five different Hawkeyes recorded a hit, led by freshman Allyssa Ramos who went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Iowa started the game hot, scoring in the top of the first. Sophomore Jena Young reached on a Hoosier error and was able to get to third with one out in the inning. Redshirt junior Desiree Rivera plated Young on a sacrifice fly to get Iowa on the board first, 1-0. Indiana limited the damage as Iowa left the bases loaded. The Hoosiers answered back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double to tie the game at one.

Sophomore Soo-Jin Berry and Rivera reached base for the Hawkeyes to start the third inning. Ramos was the third one to the plate and sent one over the fence in left center to give Iowa the lead back, 4-1. In the home half of the inning, Tretton worked around a couple of baserunners to keep the Iowa lead at three.

Iowa loaded the loaded the bases in the fourth with one out after walks to Tatianna Roman, Young and a single by Berry. Ramos picked up her fourth RBI of the game on a hit-by-pitch to score Roman from third. Young extended the Hawkeye lead, 6-1, coming home on a wild pitch. The Hoosiers were able to load the bases in the bottom of the inning and had a run come home on a bases loaded wallk. Tretton limited the damage and got the final out of the inning on a strikeout.

Iowa went three up and three down in the top of the fifth. Indiana continued to chip away, scoring one in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single to cut the Hawkeye lead to three. Adams entered the game in relief and walked the first batter she faced but got the next out to end the inning.

Adams came back out to the circle in the sixth as the Hoosiers got within one, 6-5, on a two-run home run. Adams got out of the inning with the Iowa lead at one.

Iowa was unable to add any insurance runs in the seventh. Indiana had its leadoff hitter reach base in the final frame and was able to move into scoring position with one out. Adams locked in and retired the final two Hoosier hitters to close out the victory.

Iowa finished with six runs on seven hits and one error. Indiana finished the game with five runs on nine hits and two errors.

HEAR FROM ACTING HEAD COACH KARL GOLLAN

"Quality teams like Indiana don't present a lot of opportunities so when they do you have to take advantage. I felt like we did a good job of having our best at bats when it mattered most. We made enough defensive plays and pitches to close the deal."
