IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field’s Bryce Ruland was named the Big Ten Men’s Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.
The freshman from Waterford, Wisconsin, had an outstanding collegiate outdoor debut, winning the men’s discus at the UCF Black and Gold Invitational in Orlando, Florida, on March 22. Ruland fired a 55.75-meter mark to claim the title, while posting Iowa’s 10th-best mark in program history in the discus. Ruland is currently the top-ranked freshman in the Big Ten in the event. He also earned a second-place finish of 17.74 meters in the shot put to solidify a strong opening weekend.
Ruland is Iowa’s first Big Ten Men’s Freshman of the Week award winner since Abraham Vogelsang earned the honor during indoor season on Feb. 5.
