AMES, Iowa - The University of Iowa softball team fell to Iowa State, 9-5, in game one of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series on Tuesday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
Freshman Talia Tretton (7-8) got the start and threw three and 2/3 innings, before senior Haley Downe came in to relieve the final 1/3. Sophomore Jaylee Ojo entered in the fifth inning and went the rest of the way. Six Hawkeyes recorded at least one hit. Redshirt junior Desiree Rivera was the only hitter to pick up multiple hits going 2-for-4. Sophomore Devin Simon launched her second home run of the season in the second inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first, both teams managed to get a runner on but neither team got on the board.
Simon got the Hawkeyes on the board, 1-0, in the second with a two-out home run to right center. Tretton had a shut down bottom half of the inning retiring the Cyclones in order.
The Cyclones took the lead on the fourth scoring six runs in six hits. The first five Iowa State hitters reached base to start the inning with two runs coming home on an RBI double. The Cyclones plated three more on an RBI double and a bases-loaded walk before Iowa made a pitching change. With Downe in the circle, Iowa State plated one more run pushing its lead to five.
Iowa responded in the top of the fifth scoring four runs, cutting the Cyclone lead to one. The Hawkeyes loaded the bases on free passes, and cashed in on an infield single from junior Echo Mattiello. Iowa continued to rally with an RBI single through the left side from Tory Bennett plating two, 6-4. The Hawkeyes added one more in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Tretton.
Ojo started in the circle in the bottom half of the fifth and worked around some traffic on the base path to keep the deficit at one for Iowa. The Hawkeyes had two runners on in the top of the sixth, but an inning ending double play ended the threat.
Iowa State added insurance in the bottom of the sixth scoring three runs on two hits, pushing its lead 9-5. The Hawkeyes started the seventh with a single, but the the Cyclones closed out the inning to secure the win.
Iowa finished the game with five runs on seven hits. Iowa State had nine runs on 11 hits and one error.
