The University of Iowa softball team hosts Penn State for a three game series April 19-21. First pitch at Bob Pearl Field on Saturday is set for 5pm CT, Sunday for 2 pm CT, and Monday at 4 pm CT. Tickets are available for $7 for adults and are free for youth 18 and under.

LAST TIME OUT

The University of Iowa softball team swept Maryland in their three-game series in College Park this past weekend. The Hawkeyes defeated the Terrapins in game one, 6-1, game two, 9-0 (5 innings) and game three, 7-2.

The Iowa softball team fell to Iowa State, 9-5, in game one of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series this past Tuesday at the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames.

Freshman Talia Tretton (7-8) got the start and threw three and 2/3 innings, before senior Haley Downe came in to relieve the final 1/3. Sophomore Jaylee Ojo entered in the fifth inning and went the rest of the way. Six Hawkeyes recorded at least one hit. Redshirt junior Desiree Rivera was the only hitter to pick up multiple hits going 2-for-4. Sophomore Devin Simon launched her second home run of the season in the second inning.

SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONS

Head Coach Clarisa Crowell is in her fifth season at the helm of the Nittany Lions. Penn State is currently 6-7 in conference play, and coming in on a two game losing streak after falling to #22 Ohio State 14-11, and in a midweek matchup against Pittsburgh, 16-8 (6 innings). Penn State is led offensively by sophomore infielder Brooke Klosowicz who is hitting .462. Klosowicz also is tied for most home runs on the team (11), and leads in RBIs (45). Klosowicz leads the nation in doubles with 19. Senior pitcher Mady Volpe leads in the circle with 97 innings so far on the year and 21 games started. Volpe has 62 strikeouts this season, and leads the Big Ten and the nation in pitching appearances (37).

IN THE B1G LEAGUES

  • Redshirt junior catcher Desiree Rivera leads the conference and is ranked 24th nationally in runners caught stealing with 11 runners caught.
  • Junior centerfielder Tory Bennett leads the Big Ten in sacrifice bunts per game (.27) and is ranked 17th nationally.
  • Ace junior RHP Jalen Adams is second in the Big Ten and fourth nationally in victories (18). Adams is second in the conference in innings pitched (144), and tenth nationally.

SOOJ THE STAR

Sophomore infielder Soo-Jin Berry was named one of Softball America's Stars of the Week of 3/24 after her standout game in Iowa's upset against then No. 5/6 UCLA. Berry hit two home runs in the game, the first muti-home run game of her career.

LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

The Hawkeyes have a team voted group of captains, called the Leadership Council. The select for the 2025 season include senior Tatianna Roman, Junior Jalen Adams, senior Rylie Moss, and redshirt junior Desiree Rivera.

STATISTICAL LEADERS

  • Sophomore infielder Jena Young leads the Hawkeyes in batting average hitting .376.
  • Sophomore infielder Soo-Jin Berry leads the squad with home runs (9) in RBIs (26).
  • Outfielders Bennett and Roman each have a perfect fielding percentage. Roman has contributed 40 putouts and Bennett has contributed 62 on the year.
  • Jalen Adams leads the pitchers with 144 innings pitched and 104 strikeouts.

STARTING STREAKS

Three Hawkeyes have started all 41 games so far this season; Devin Simon in right field, Jena Young in the middle infield, and Tory Bennett in center field.

HANNAH'S TEXAS TEAR

After posting 16 RBIs and three home runs across four games at the Lion Invitational, senior catcher Hannah Lindsay was named Big Ten Co-Player of the week on a 17. The Surprise, Arizona, native hit .667 in four-games at the Lion Invitational at East Texas A&M.

PLAYING THE BEST

The Hawkeyes are set to face eight different teams that made the 2024 NCAA Tournament: Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana Lafayette, Missouri, Penn State, Tennessee and UCLA.

BELIEVE THE (PRESEASON) HYPE

Adams, Berry and Young were named Big Ten Players to Watch for 2025.

NEW ERA OF THE B1G

The Big Ten welcomed four new schools to the conference, three of which will compete in softball for the 2025 season. Big Ten softball added NCAA tournament qualifiers Oregon, UCLA and Washington for softball. The Hawkeyes hosted UCLA in their Big Ten home opener on March 22 in Iowa City.

UP NEXT

Iowa will host Drake for an in-state midweek matchup on Wednesday, Arpil 23. First pitch is at 5 pm CT at Bob Pearl Field. Iowa will then hit the road for a three game series in East Lansing against Michigan State April 25-27. Friday's game is at 4 pm CT, Saturday's game is at noon, and Sunday's finale is at noon. All four of Iowa's games next week will be availabe to stream on B1G+.
