Eugene, Ore. – Senior Barbora Pokorna’s singles win at the No. 4 singles position clinched the 32nd-ranked University of Iowa women’s tennis team’s 4-3 win at Oregon on Friday at the Student Tennis Center.
The win moves Iowa’s record to 13-8 overall and 7-5 in Big Ten Conference play heading into Sunday’s regular season finale at Washington.
Oregon (8-13) took an early lead by securing the highly contested doubles point. On court two, Daianne Hayashida and Marisa Schmidt made quick work of Bridget Mihulka and Karin Young, 6-2. The Ducks responded at No. 1, where Tilde Jagare and Juliet Santitto edged No. 119 Tereza Dejnozkova and Nikita Vishwase, 6-4.
The deciding match on court three saw Candela Aparisi and Marjorie Souza defeat Barbora Pokorna and Pia Kranholdt 7-5 to clinch the point.
In singles, Iowa responded with three straight-set wins. On court two, No. 108 Hayashida cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Young. On court one, No. 119 Dejnozkova defeated Souza 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) in a tiebreaker and Schmidt extended the Hawkeyes’lead at No. 3 with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jagare.
Oregon battled back with wins on court five and six, tying the match at three. At No. 6, Santitto defeated Vishwase, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, while Aparisi overcame Kranholdt, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1.
Pokorna clinched the Hawkeye win at No. 4 singles, downing Daughters in a three-set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
