WTEN Preview \\ at Big Ten Tournament

The ninth-seeded University of Iowa women’s tennis team opens Big Ten Tournament play Wednesday, facing eighth-seeded Maryland in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament at Libbey Park in Ojai, California. The dual will begin at 11 a.m. (CT).

THIS WEEK
The ninth-seeded University of Iowa women’s tennis team opens Big Ten Tournament play Wednesday, facing eighth-seeded Maryland in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament at Libbey Park in Ojai, California. The dual will begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
• With a victory, the Hawkeyes would advance to face top-seeded Michigan in the Big Ten quarterfinals.
• Iowa has won at least one match at the Big Ten Tournament in four of the last five seasons.

THE OPPONENTS
• The Terrapins, ranked 54th in the April 15 ITA team poll, are 14-11 overall and 7-6 in Big Ten play.
• Wednesday’s match will be a rematch from April 4 -- a 4-2 Terrapin victory at the Tennis Center at College Park.
• The Terps’ Danielle Hack and Kallista Liu are ranked No. 66 nationally in doubles.

LAST MATCH
The Hawkeyes split their final weekend of regular season competition, defeating Oregon, 4-3, on April 18 at the Student Tennis Center before falling 4-0 to No. 18 Washington on April 20 at the Lloyd Norstrom Tennis Center. In the Hawkeyes’ win over Washington, head coach Sasha Boros moved into second place in program history with 102 victories.

QUICK HITTERS
• Iowa is 10-1 this spring when opening the match by claiming the doubles points.
• Pokorna and junior Daianne Hayashida lead the team in singles victories this spring with 12. Eight of Pokorna’s 12 victories have came in straight sets. Pokorna has played at the Nos. 3-6 singles positions.
Sasha Boros is in her ninth season as Iowa’s head coach. The Iowa alum has guided the Hawkeyes to 102 victories during her eight-year tenure -- the second-most in program history. She has 279 wins as a head coach in stops at Stetson, Missouri and Iowa.

IN THE RANKINGS
• Iowa is ranked No. 32 in the April 15 ITA team rankings.
• Juniors Daianne Hayashida and Tereza Dejnozkova are featured in the singles rankings - Hayashida comes in at No. 108, while Dejnozkova is No. 119.
• Dejnozkova and Nikita Vishwase are 68th in the doubles rankings -- a season high.
TESS = BIG TEN PRESEASON PLAYER TO WATCH
Junior Tereza Dejnozkova has been named a Big Ten Preseason Player to Watch for the 2025 season. The Czech Republic native has posted a 14-13 overall singles and 13-12 doubles record this season, which included a third-place finish at the ITA Central Regionals in October. It was the highest finish by a Hawkeye all-time.
• Dejnozkova transferred to Iowa from South Alabama, where she was a second-team All-Sun Belt selection as a sophomore. She won 32 singles and 23 doubles matches during her two seasons.
• The Czech Republic native has posted an 9-9 record this spring with the nine wins being tied for the third-most on the team. She made her Hawkeye debut at the No. 1 singles position in the win over DePaul on Feb. 9.
Dejnozkova was named the Big Ten Co-Player of the Week on March 19 after posting a 4-0 record in Hawkeye wins over No. 46 Illinois and No. 38 Northwestern. She clinched Iowa’s 4-3 win over Northwestern, the program’s first over the Wildcats in 15 years.

DAI’S STRONG FALL
Junior Daianne Hayashida had a team-best seven singles victories during the fall season, posting a 7-3 overall record. She also won four matches, teamming with Marisa Schmidt in doubles.
• Hayashida won the consolation singles title at the ITA Sectionals in Ann Arbor in November.
• The Peru native is 12-5 in dual action this spring, with 11 of her 12 victories coming in straight sets.
• Hayashida, who earned All-Big Ten recognition as a sophomore, has 51 career singles and 42 career doubles victories.

MARISA RETURNS
Senior Marisa Schmidt returns for her final season as a Hawkeye after posting a team-best 13-5 singles record during the 2024 season. She posted a 12-1 record at the No. 2 singles position a season ago.
• The Germany native has 47 career singles and 40 career doubles victories.
