Hawkeyes Open Play at B1G Championships

The University of Iowa men’s golf team wrapped up the first round of the Big Ten Championships on Friday at Baltimore Country Club’s Five Farms East Course.

BALTIMORE, Maryland - The University of Iowa men’s golf team wrapped up the first round of the Big Ten Championships on Friday at Baltimore Country Club’s Five Farms East Course. The Hawkeyes posted a team score of 14-over par to sit in 18th place.

Junior Gage Messingham led the way for Iowa, firing an even-par 70. Messingham was steady all day, carding two birdies on the back nine to post a team-best 34 on his first nine.

Sophomore Max Tjoa and freshman Ryan Shellberg each turned in rounds of 3-over par 73. Shellberg recorded birdies on holes three and five to jumpstart his front nine.

Freshman Chance Rinkol rounded out Iowa’s scoring with a 78 (+8). Despite some tough holes early, Rinkol birdied hole 12.

Josh Lundmark did not post a score for the team due to an injury.

“I believe we were better today than what the scores reflect. Gage played well and Max and Ryan were close. Losing Josh after five holes was tough and meant we had to count 78. We need guys to step up tomorrow in his absence. We are going to compete and catch as many teams as we can.”
