Piscataway, NJ – The 28th-ranked University of Iowa women’s tennis team secured a 4-1 victory over Rutgers on Sunday afternoon at the Livingston Tennis Center.
Iowa started strong in doubles play. On court three, Barbora Pokorna and Pia Kranholdt defeated Jackeline Lopez and Zeynep Ilker, 6-0. At No. 1, Tereza Dejnozkova and Nikita Vishwase battled Mai Nguyen and Naomi Karki to a 6-3 win. With Iowa clinching the doubles point, the remaining match on court two was left unfinished. Daianne Hayashida and Marisa Schmidt held a 5-2 lead over Michae Kim and Karina Jumazhanova.
In singles play, No. 111 Hayashida extended the Hawkeyes lead to two after her 6-2, 6-1 win over Frankowska. The win marked Hayashida’s 50th career singles victory.
The Scarlet Knights fought back with its lone point of the match at No. 1, with Nguyen defeating No. 115 Dejnozkova, 6-3, 6-3. Pokorna added a third point on court four with a straight set win over Lopez, 6-4, 6-1. Vishwase clinched the match for Hawkeyes at No. 6 with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Ilker.
The remaining matches were left unfinished with Iowa clinching its fourth point. On court three, Jumazhanova had a slight 6-7(5), 2-4 lead over Schmidt. At No. 5, Kranholdt was battling Kim, 6-7(4), 2-4.
