IOWA CITY, Iowa – Two University of Iowa baseball student-athletes – juniors Cade Obermueller and Kooper Schulte – have earned Big Ten weekly recognition, it was announced Monday by the league office. Obermueller was tabbed the league’s Pitcher of the Week, while Schulte garnered Player of the Week honors.
It is the sixth time in program history that the Hawkeyes brought home the two awards in the same week.
Obermueller threw a seven-inning complete game on Friday as Iowa defeated Northwestern, 12-1. He allowed just one hit – a single – one walk and one unearned run. The Iowa City, Iowa, native struck out a career-high 12 batters and allowed a batting average against of .045.
The honor is the third of his career and it is the second Pitcher of the Week for the Hawkeyes this season (Aaron Savary, March 10).
Schulte slashed .600/.692/1.200 on the week. He tallied seven RBI, and five runs scored as Iowa went 3-1 on the week, defeating Bradley and winning its fifth straight Big Ten series at Northwestern. The New London, Iowa, native hit .571 with runners on and successfully advanced runners in 7 of 9 chances (.778). He went 4-for-4 with runners on third base with less than two outs.
Schulte went 3-for-3 with two doubles in Iowa's win on Saturday after being a late addition to the lineup following a scratch an hour before first pitch. The Hawkeyes extended their Big Ten-winning streak to 10 games for the first time since 2007.
The honor is the first of his career and it is the second Player of the Week for the Hawkeyes this season (Reese Moore, March 24).
Iowa returns to action Tuesday at 4:02 p.m. (CT) as the Hawkeyes host Milwaukee at Duane Banks Field.
