IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field’s Maria Arboleda was named the Big Ten Women’s Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.

The freshman from Valle del Cauca, Colombia, earned the honor following a record-breaking performance at the Musco Twilight. Arboleda set both a facility and school record in the high jump, clearing 1.88 meters. The mark improved her previous school record and currently ranks fifth in NCAA Division I and second in the Big Ten.

Arboleda claimed the event title in Iowa City and is now the top-ranked freshman nationally in the high jump.

This is Iowa’s sixth Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor during the outdoor season. Duke Faley, Bryce Ruland, and Chioma Nwachukwu have also received the recognition earlier this spring. It marks Arboleda’s second Freshman of the Week award this season, with her first honor on April 2.

The Hawkeyes conclude the regular season, sending a small group to the Cyclone Twilight in Ames on Friday, May 9. The one-day meet begins at 3:00 p.m. (CT).
