Hawkeyes Drop Series to Huskies

The University of Iowa baseball team dropped its first conference series on Saturday night to Washington, 3-1, at Husky Ballpark.

SEATTLE – The University of Iowa baseball team dropped its first conference series on Saturday night to Washington, 3-1, at Husky Ballpark.

The Hawkeyes were 1-for-20 with runners on and 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position stranding 11 runners on base.

Aaron Savary got the start on the mound for Iowa and went 6 1/3 innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out 10.

Ben DeTaeye threw 2/3 of an inning and Chas Wheatley threw the final 1 1/3 innings allowing two runs on a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth.

Washington struck first in the contest scoring in the second inning on an RBI groundout. Iowa responded by plating a run in the third after Reese Moore doubled in a run.

The score would remain 1-1 the rest of the way until with one out in the bottom of the ninth the Huskies put one over the fence.

Ben Wilmes and Moore were both 2-for-5 and each recorded a double. Caleb Wulf also tallied two hits for the Hawkeyes.

Despite getting the leadoff runner on in 6-of-9 innings the Hawkeyes were 3-for-21 in advancement opportunities.
