IOWA CITY, Iowa – The 15th-ranked Iowa field hockey team fell to second-ranked North Carolina 4-1 Sunday afternoon at Grant Field.

“I thought we were resilient and adaptable,” head coach Lisa Cellucci said. "We kept punching back on Friday, but today we laid down a little bit. We have a very clear picture of what we need to work on. This is how we have started the season every year for the last 22 years. You have to come out of this weekend one and one, which we did, so that's the real positive here.”

The Hawkeyes struck first with a goal from Dionne van Aalsum, her third of the season, assisted by Jordan Byers at 3:48 in the first quarter.

The Tar Heels answered five minutes later with a rebounded penalty corner to tie it up 1-1, finishing out the quarter. The rest of the half was all Tarheels as they scored two more goals in the second quarter to increase their lead to 3-1 going into halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter for both teams, North Carolina sealed their win with a final goal at 45:46.

OF NOTE

  • Iowa moves to 1-1 on the season.
