IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 11 University of Iowa women’s soccer team defeated Iowa State, 1-0, in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series at the Iowa Soccer Complex on Thursday night. Iowa moves to 4-1-1 on the season.
It was a defensive battle in the first 45-minutes between the two teams. Despite Iowa firing 10 shots and putting three on goal they were unable to find the net. The Hawkeyes outshot the Cyclones, 10-2, in the first half while Iowa State had one shot on goal.
Goalkeeper Fernanda Mayrink had one save in the first 45 minutes for Iowa.
Junior Abby Skiff didn’t take long to find the net in the second half however, as just four minutes in she was able to convert after freshman Liana Tarasco found Skiff on a corner kick. Skiff is now one of four Hawkeyes to have two goals on the season. Tarasco, a true freshman, is tied for the second most assists on the season with two.
Iowa kept applying pressure on the Cyclone defense as they finished with 27 shots, a season high. Tarasco led the team with eight shot attempts while freshman Elle Wildman had seven shot attempts.
Despite the high number of shots, Iowa wasn’t able to find the back of the net for the rest of the game as they would go on to win, 1-0. Skiff’s goal was the game winner, her second of the season.
