Van Aalsum Propels Hawkeye Win in Double OT

The 10th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Ohio State, 3-2 in double overtime to close out the regular season.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 10th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Ohio State, 3-2 in double overtime to close out the regular season.

“This was a great win for the Hawks," head coach Lisa Cellucci said. "That game had a bit of everything in it. I’m very proud of our resilience and our grit to get the outcome. We’re excited for our second season to begin. Onto the postseason.”

The Hawkeyes started the scoring in the first period at 9:28 with a goal off a corner from Dionne van Aalsum assisted by Felicia Zonnenberg and Jordan Byers. After a quiet second period, van Aalsum extended the scoring for Iowa with a second goal at 35:17 in the third period to give a 2-0 lead.   

Ohio State responded in the third period with a goal off of a penalty corner and another goal just four minutes later to tie the game up, 2-2.   

Neither team was able to score in the fourth period, sending the game to overtime — Iowa’s third overtime game of the season.   

Neither team was able to capitalize in the first overtime period. van Aalsum was able to find the back of the net in the second overtime to close out the day with a hat trick to secure the Hawkeye win.   

Iowa had 15 shots to Ohio State’s 17 and had only four corners to their 11. Mia Magnotta collected seven saves on the day
