Hawkeyes Win 2 Matches at Cyclone Invitational

The University of Iowa women’s tennis team opened competition at the Cyclone Invitational on Friday with two victories in doubles competition.

AMES, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team opened competition at the Cyclone Invitational on Friday with two victories in doubles competition.

Sophomore Sally Xu and freshman Eline Bex paired up to defeat Kansas State’s Diana Smolinska and Margaret Jaraczewski, 8-7 (10-8). The duo finished the day with an 8-2 victory over Valeska San Martin Ramirez and Gabriela Felix of Iowa State.

In singles action, Xu fell to Smolinska, 2-6, 2-6, while Bex battled through three sets before dropping a tight match against Jaraczewski, 0-6, 7-5, 5-7.

The Hawkeyes will continue play at the Cyclone Invitational on Saturday.

“It was great to start the season for Sally and Eline,” said Iowa assistant coach Elise van Heuvelen Treadwell. “It is their first fall tournament as Hawkeyes, and Eline’s first couple of wins in Black and Gold. There’s lots to learn from on day one for the rest of the weekend. We’re excited to be out on court again and build on things from today.”
