The No. 7 University of Iowa women’s soccer team hosts Maryland on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. (CT). They then host No. 18 Michigan State on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. (CT). Both matches will take place at the Iowa Soccer Complex.

SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS
- Maryland comes into the match with a 6-7-0 overall record including a 2-4-0 conference record. They currently sit at 13th in the Big Ten conference standings after being picked to finish last in the preseason poll, voted on by coaches.
- Ava Morales and Kelsey Smith lead the Terrapins offensively with four goals apiece. Both players have fired 22 shots on the season.
- Five different players co-lead the team with two assists on the season.
- Maryland is currently being outscored, 19-17, on the season. They have been outscored, 11-7, in the second half this season, including being outshot, 93-62, in the second half of games on the season.
- Faith Luckey has been the lone goalkeeper for Maryland throughout the season. She has allowed 19 goals on the season while posting 57 saves. Her 4.38 saves per game rank fourth in the conference.
- Maryland averages 4.92 fouls per game which ranks as the second least amount in the country. Iowa averages 10.77 fouls per contest.
- The Terrapins are currently on a three-game losing skid, where they have been outscored, 6-1.

SERIES HISTORY - MARYLAND
Iowa leads the all-time series between the two teams at 6-2-0. The Hawkeyes have won four straight over the Terrapins. When playing in Iowa City, the Hawkeyes are, 4-1, against Maryland. The last four matches Iowa is outscoring Maryland, 12-0. The last time Iowa allowed a goal to the Terrapins was in their most recent loss to them in which they fell, 4-0, on Sept. 14, 2018, at Maryland. The first meeting between the two teams came on Sept. 25, 2014, in Iowa City with Iowa falling, 1-0. In their most recent meeting the Hawkeyes defeated Maryland, 5-0, on Oct. 15, 2023, in Iowa City.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
- Michigan State heads into the week at 6-2-5 overall, including a 3-0-3 Big Ten Conference record. The Spartans currently sit tied for third in the Big Ten after being picked to finish fourth in the pre-season poll.
- Prior to taking on the Hawkeyes, Michigan State travels to Ann Arbor to take on the Wolverines.
- The Spartans haven’t suffered a lost since Sept. 4th when they fell to No. 5 Notre Dame, 3-0.
- Michigan State is 2-1-2 when playing on the road and 1-1-2 on the season when playing against ranked opponents.
- Kennedy Bell leads Michigan State offensively with nine goals while also dishing out four assists. Bell’s .69 goals per game rank 25th nationally and first in the conference. Her 1.69 points per game also leads the conference while ranking 24th nationally. Her 22 total points on the season leads the conference and is 16th in the country.
- Michigan State leads the Big Ten in goal differential (+18), points per game (7.0), scoring offense (2.46), total goals (32), and total points (91).
- Noelle Henning has played the most minutes at goalkeeper for the Spartans this season at 765 minutes. She has allowed 12 goals in nine games while posting 29 saves. She has three shutouts on the season.
SERIES HISTORY - MICHIGAN STATE
Iowa trails Michigan State in the all-time series, 10-14-5. The last time the two teams met Iowa picked up a win over at the time the No. 12 Spartans, 2-1, on the road. The last time the two teams played in Iowa City was Oct. 31, 2021, with Iowa falling, 2-1. The first meeting between the two teams came on Oct. 17, 1997, with Michigan State winning, 3-2, in East Lansing.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Sofia Bush, Millie Greer, and Liana Tarasco were named Big Ten Players to Watch. The Hawkeyes were picked sixth in the Big Ten Preseason Poll. Bush was also named a midfielder to watch by Top Drawer Soccer.
- Iowa is filled with veteran leadership, rostering eight graduate students and three seniors.
- Meike Ingles (lower leg injury), Eva Pattison (redshirt), and Abby Warner (redshirt) will be out for the rest of the 2025 season.
- Iowa’s No. 13 preseason ranking was the highest preseason ranking in program history. It also marked just the second time Iowa earned a preseason ranking.
- The Hawkeyes No. 7 ranking ties the highest ranking in program history.
- The Hawkeyes graduated the program’s all-time winningest goalkeeper in Macy Enneking. Enneking defended the goal for Iowa in each of the last three seasons.
- Kenzie Roling, Greer, and Bush were voted team captains.
THE DIIANNI FILE
- DiIanni signed a contract extension on Feb. 27, 2025, that extended the programs all-time winningest coach through 2029.
- DiIanni is 3-2 in his Iowa career against opponents ranked sixth or higher. Before his arrival, Iowa was 0-7 in those games and was outscored, 29-4.
- Entering this season, DiIanni is the second active winningest D1 coach in the country by percentage, with a win percentage of .753. He only trails Paul Ratcliffe of Stanford at .784.
- DiIanni entered 2025 with the 19th most wins amongst active D1 coaches.
- DiIanni is the 41st winningest coach of all-time based of win percentage. He is the sixth winningest D1 coach of all-time.
- DiIanni has won all four NCAA Tournament matches in program history.

- After hosting seven home games at the Iowa Soccer Complex, Iowa’s average attendance of 2,082 fans ranks fifth in the country and first in the Big Ten.
- Iowa’s home match against TCU marked a program regular season crowd attendance record with 2,382 fans. - The year prior to DiIanni’s arrival, in 2013, the Hawkeyes averaged an attendance of 522 fans per game.
QUICK HITTERS
- Graduate student Price Loposer’s 91 games played in her career are tied for the second most games played amongst active players. She only tails Lia Godfrey of Virginia with 96 games played.
- Greer has played and started in every game. She has also played the full 90 minutes in 12 of 13 matches. She leads the team with 1,117 minutes on the season.
- Taylor Kane is 17 -2 in her collegiate career as the starting goalkeeper.
- Iowa ranks first in the Big Ten in shots on goal per game (7.23).
- Iowa is outshooting their opponents, 208-104. They are outscoring their opponents, 24-10.
