Magallan Named B1G Freshman of the Week

Freshman Ella Magallan was named the Big Ten Women’s Cross Country Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday. The rookie from Burleson, Texas, ran 17:43.9 in her 5,000-meter debut at the Joe Piane Invite on Oct. 3.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa freshman Ella Magallan was named the Big Ten Women’s Cross Country Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.

The freshman from Burleson, Texas, ran 17:43.9 in her 5,000-meter debut at the Joe Piane Invite on Oct. 3. She finished fourth among Hawkeyes. Magallan has scored in all three of Iowa’s races this fall.

It is the second time this year that Magallan has earned the award. She previously claimed the distinction on Sept. 10 after placing eighth at the Hawkeye Invite.

In total, it is the fourth time a Hawkeye has won a weekly conference award this season.

Iowa returns to action for its regular-season finale on Oct. 18 at the Pre-National Invitational in Columbia, Missouri.
