IOWA CITY, IOWA – The No. 5-regional seeded University of Iowa women soccer team defeated South Dakota State, 1-0, on Friday evening at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes advance to the Round of 32 for the third consecutive season.

It didn’t take long for the Hawkeyes to get on the scoreboard, with graduate student Kenzie Roling finding the back of the net in the 3rd minute for her fourth goal of the season. Redshirt junior Lexy Griffin was credited for the assist, her second of the season.

The Hawkeyes stayed in the offensive attack the rest of the half, firing seven shots including two on goal. Defensively Iowa allowed four first half shots while sophomore goalkeeper Fernanda Mayrink had one save. After 45 minutes, Iowa led 1-0.

In the 49th minute SDSU was awarded a penalty kick. Mayrink laid out to get the save and keep the Jackrabbits off the board.

Iowa would fire 11 shots in the second half, putting seven on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net. The Hawkeye defense allowed just three second half shots as they posted their 10th shutout of the season.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI
“The crowd never used to be that way. For us right now, it’s very rewarding to be able to play in front of fans that take the time out of their day, their money, and their time to come out and support our women and feel like it’s a good product that we are putting on the field. We’ve had great fans all year. First in the Big Ten and top five in the country. We are trying to be role models and mentors in front others.
