CLINTON, South Carolina -- The University of Iowa women’s wrestling team crowned five champions at the Blue Hose Challenge on Sunday. All 11 Hawkeyes that made the trip to Clinton, South Carolina, registered top-three finishes.
At 103, No. 4 Valarie Solorio claimed the title after two back-to-back technical falls and then a third in the semifinals over Lilian Prendergast of Mount Olive. Then, her win by pin (1:01) against fellow Hawkeye Rianne Murphy in the finals secured the title.
Nyla Valencia dominated the 110-pound bracket, outscoring her opponents 30-0. The redshirt junior tallied three straight technical falls en route to the title, including a 36-second technical fall over Life University’s Diana Gonzalez in the championship bout.
Freshman Bella Williams advanced to the finals after a technical fall over Olivia Mottley of Life University. Then, a win by decision over Janida Garcia of Emmanuel University, gave Williams the 131 pound title. It marked the first title of her Hawkeye career.
A fall (1:18), technical fall (10-0) and a decision (11-8) gave senior Skye Realin a shot at the 138-pound title. In the championship bout, Realin won by technical fall (14-3) over teammate Ella Schmit.
After three straight technical fall victories, No. 2 Reese Larramendy won the 145 pound title over Paige Wehrmeister (unattached) with a 9-0 win by decision.
Three Hawkeyes captured second-place finishes, including Rianne Murphy (103), Harlee Hiller (117), No. 4 Cali Leng (124), and Ella Schmit (138). Two Hawkeyes placed third, including No. 3 Karlee Brooks (131) and Cadence Diduch (145).
Freshman Harlee Hiller notched three wins, including two by technical fall and a pin on her way to the finals at 117 pounds. In the championship match, Hiller battled, but ultimately fell to No. 3 Karissa Turnwall (TF 12-2) of Emmanuel University.
