IOWA CITY, Iowa- Two University of Iowa women's gymnasts, JerQuavia Henderson and Sydney Turner, have been named Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch, the conference office announced Tuesday. The GymHawks were picked to finish sixth in the Big Ten Preseason Poll.
Henderson will return to action after not competing the previous two seasons. The Peoria, Illinois, native is a two-time Big Ten floor champion (2021, 2023) and she shares the program record in the event with a score of 9.975. The three-time All-Big Ten selection ranks in the top 10 in school history in three events — first in floor, ninth on beam (9.925), 10th on vault (9.925) and uneven bars (9.825).
Turner is coming off a freshman season where she competed in 11 meets, including being an all-around competitor early in the season. She posted career highs of 9.775 on vault and 9.925 on uneven bars and recorded a season-best 9.800 on floor at NCAA Regionals. The Vancouver, Canada, native recorded six top three finishes on bars, including winning one event title.
Defending Big Ten champion UCLA was voted the preseason favorite, followed by Michigan State, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State and Iowa in sixth.
The GymHawks open the 2026 season Jan. 2, traveling to Salt Lake City for a tri-meet against Utah and Minnesota. The Hawkeyes host their home opener Jan. 10 in a border battle with Illinois, Illinois State and Iowa State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
