BROOKLYN, New York - No. 1 UConn (12-0, 3-0) defeated No. 11 Iowa (10-2, 1-0) at the Women’s Champions Classic, 90-64.
Senior Hannah Stuelke led the scoring for Iowa with 17 points (8-for-11), five rebounds, and five assists. Sophomore Chit-Chat Wright followed behind with 16 of her own, going 4-for-8 from the three-point line along with four rebounds and three assists.
The Hawkeyes came out to a slow start, finishing the first quarter down, 12-22. Wright and sophomore Ava Heiden made the difference for Iowa. Wright had five points. Heiden collected four rebounds and one assist to keep the momentum going into the second quarter.
Iowa found their groove in the second with five different Hawkeyes helping to score. The Hawkeye defense forced three turnovers. Sophomore Taylor Stremlow drained two three-point baskets to make a statement in the last three minutes of play. The Hawkeyes out rebounded the Huskies 20-11 in the second quarter as Iowa trailed by 11 at the break.
Heiden got the scoring started in the third with a layup to respond to UConn’s back-to-back three-pointers. Stremlow led Iowa with five third quarter points.
Four different Hawkeyes scored in the fourth quarter as the UConn lead grew. Stuelke led Iowa with four points on 2-of-3 shooting in the final quarter. Iowa shot 24-of-66 (36.4 percent) from the field and 10-of-25 (40 percent) from deep during the game.
