Hawkeyes Fall in ITA Kickoff Weekend Regional Final

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 12 Ohio State in the Columbus Regional Final on Monday afternoon during the ITA Kickoff Weekendat the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.

The Buckeyes took an early lead by securing the highly-contested doubles point. At No. 1, Hephzibah Oluwadare and Teah Chavez defeated Daianne Hayashida and Mia Mack, 6-3. On court three, No. 65 Nao Nishino and Audrey Spencer edged No. 82 Eline Bex and Nikita Vishwase, 6-4.

The final doubles match on court two was left unfinished, with the Buckeyes clinching the doubles point. Pia Kranholdt and Emma Tothová were leading Luciana Perry and Alessia Cau, 5-4.

In singles play, Spencer defeated Vishwase, 6-0, 6-1, on court five to extend Ohio State’s lead. On court three, No. 68 Nishino added a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Tothová and the Buckeyes clinched the match when Flora Johnson defeated Sally Xu, 6-0, 6-1, on court six.

The remaining singles matches were left unfinished. On court one, Hayashida was battling No. 10 Perry, trailing 4-6, 2-4. On court two, Mack was leading No. 14 Chavez, 7-5, 1-2, and No. 91 Sophia Cisse-Ignatiev was ahead 6-3, 3-4 against Kranholdt on court four.

Iowa will return to action Friday, hosting No. 17 Texas in its home opener at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex at noon (CT).
