IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa women’s tennis teamdropped a 6-1 decision to No. 18 Texas on Friday afternoon in the home opener at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
The Longhorns took an early lead by securing the highly contested doubles point. At No. 1, Daianne Hayashida and Mia Mack cruised to a 6-1 win over Christasha McNeil and Salma Drugdova.
Texas followed with victories on courts two and three to secure the first point. At No. 2, Carmen Herea and Elizabeth Ionescu defeated Pia Kranholdt and Emma Tothová, 6-3. In the deciding match on court three, No. 82 Nikita Vishwase and Eline Bex were edged by Mathilde Ngijol-Carré and Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo, 6-4.
In singles action, Anazagasty-Pursoo defeated Vishwase, 6-1, 6-1, on court five and the Longhorns pushed their lead to 3-0 with No. 2 Herea posting a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Hayashida at the one line. On court four, Ionescu defeated Kranholdt, 6-3, 6-1 to clinch the match and Texas extended its lead on court six when Drugdova defeated Xu, 6-2, 6-4.
Iowa earned its lone point of the match on court two with Mack defeating Eszter Meri, 6-0, 1-6, 6-1. This victory marked a 5-0 start to Mack’s singles career with the Hawkeyes.
In the final match of the day, Tothová was edged by McNeil, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, on court three.
