Tjoa Takes Individual Lead After Round 2

The Iowa men’s golf team continued strong play on Tuesday at the Puerto Rico Classic, posting a nine-under-par 279 in round two.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The University of Iowa men’s golf team continued strong play on Tuesday at the Puerto Rico Classic, posting a nine-under-par 279 in round two at Grand Reserve Golf Club. The Hawkeyes moved to 21-under par overall and sit in seventh place heading into the final round.

Junior Max Tjoa fired a second-round five-under-par 67 to move into first place individually at 11-under par. Tjoa carded five birdies and no bogeys throughout the day, building on his opening-round performance.

Redshirt freshman Grant Gudgel matched Tjoa with a five-under-par 67 of his own. Gudgel’s round included a bogey-free front nine highlighted by an eagle and pushed him to nine-under par overall, placing him inside the top five individually.

Sophomore Ryan Shellberg turned in an even-par 72 in round two and sits at five-under par for the tournament. Shellberg closed strong with three straight birdies on holes 16, 17, and 18.

Freshman Bennett Warren added a one-over-par 73 and is four-over par overall, while sophomore Chance Rinkol rounded out the team play with an eight-over-par 80. Redshirt freshman Jack McCarty, competing individually, posted a one-under-par 71 and sits at even par through two rounds.

Iowa remains ahead of several ranked programs, including No. 32 Georgia, No. 29 Louisville, and No. 37 Purdue, as well as Big Ten foes Minnesota and Wisconsin.

"The guys finished solid after a slow start. Todays wind was stronger and we started on an into the wind stretch of holes. We made some early bogies but the guys regrouped and finished the round strong. Max and Grant were rock solid again. They’re both playing with a lot confidence and put themselves in contention."
