No. 37 Hawkeyes Top Tulsa at Red Blue Invitational

The 37th-ranked Iowa women’s tennis team opened the Red Blue Invitational with a 4-3 victory over Tulsa on Friday at the Tucson Racquet Club.

TUCSON, Ariz. The 37th-ranked University of Iowa women’s tennis team opened the Red Blue Invitational with a 4-3 victory over Tulsa on Friday afternoon at the Tucson Racquet Club. The win moves the Hawkeyes’ record to 5-4 overall this spring.

The Hawkeyes took an early lead by securing the doubles point for the second straight dual. At No. 2, Tereza Dejnozkova and Emma Tothová defeated Tayla Wilmot and Coral Valle, 6-4, and Pia Kranholdt and Sally Xu clinched the point with a 6-4 victory over Erin McKenzie and Isabelle Basson on court three.

The match on court one was left unfinished with No. 33 Daianne Hayashida and Mia Mack leading Maria Santos and Carolina Alonso, 4-3.

In singles action, the Golden Hurricanes evened the score at one with Valle defeating Eline Bex, 6-0, 6-1 on court six. The Hawkeyes responded at No. 3, where Dejnozkova downed Alonso 7-6(3), 6-3 and No. 67 Mack added a dominant 6-3, 6-0 victory over Santos on court one to make the score 3-1.  Mack is 8-0 in singles this spring.

Tulsa tied the match at three with Lilitha Ndungane edging Kranholdt on court five, 7-5, 6-4, and Basson defeating Hayashida 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2.

Tothová clinched the Hawkeyes win on court four, winning a three-set match against Alice Baba. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Tothová posted 7-6(5), 6-4 set victories to send Iowa to its second straight win.

The Hawkeyes will return to action later this afternoon, facing No. 40 Arizona in doubles matches, beginning at 4 p.m. (CT) at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

UP NEXT 
Iowa will conclude the Red Blue Invitational on Saturday, finishing the dual against No. 40 Arizona in singles matches at 11 a.m. (CT) at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center, followed by a dual versus No. 32 Texas Tech at 4 p.m. (CT) at the Tucson Racquet Club.
