No. 37 Hawkeyes Top No. 40 Arizona at Red Blue Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The 37th-ranked University of Iowa women’s tennis team recorded its first win over a ranked opponent this season, downing No. 40 Arizona, 4-3, at the Red Blue Invitational on Saturday at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The win moves the Hawkeyes’ record to 6-4 overall this spring.

The Hawkeyes came out strong, claiming the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. At No. 3, Karissa Ghigiarelli and Maria Garlia defeated Pia Kranholdt and Sally Xu, 6-2. The Hawkeyes responded with Tereza Dejnozkova and Emma Tothová edging Tanvi Narendran and Danielle Tuhten, 6-4 on court two. The win improved the pair’s record to 2-0 at the Red Blue Invitational. 

The doubles point was clinched on court one with No. 33 Daianne Hayashida and Mia Mack defeating Martyna Ostrzygalo and Ciara Moore, 6-3.

In singles action, the Wildcats evened the score at one with Narendran defeating Kranholdt, 6-1, 6-2 on court five. The Hawkeyes responded on court six, where Xu made quick work of Ghigiarelli, adding a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Arizona took the lead with Garcia defeating Tothová, 6-4, 6-0 on court four, and Martyna Ostrzygalo adding a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 67 Mack on court one. It was Mack’s first singles loss this spring.

The Hawkeyes responded with Hayashida defeating Moore in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.

Dejnozkova clinched the win on court four, winning a three-set match against Tuhten, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. The victory secured Iowa’s third straight win.
