Shellberg Leads After Opening Day at Colleton River

BLUFFTON, S.C. – The University of Iowa men’s golf team completed the first two rounds of the Colleton River Collegiate on Sunday, finishing the day in fourth place at six-under par. The Hawkeyes were led by a strong opening performance from sophomore Ryan Shellberg, who tops the individual leaderboard at seven-under-par.

"I’m happy with how we performed today," said head coach Tyler Stith. "We did a good job of managing ourselves over 36 holes and put ourselves in contention. We’re looking forward to the opportunity tomorrow."

Shellberg opened with a four-under 68 in round one, highlighted by five birdies, and followed with a three-under 69 in round two to maintain his lead through 36 holes. The Prosper, Texas, native recorded par or better on 34 of 36 holes.

Redshirt freshman Grant Gudgel follows for Iowa at two-under after back-to-back rounds of 71. Gudgel posted five birdies in the opening round and added three more in the afternoon to sit tied for 17th.

Junior Max Tjoa is also positioned at two-under in a tie for 17th, carding a two-under 70 to open the day before adding an even-par 72 in round two. Tjoa tallied 11 birdies across the two rounds.

Redshirt freshman Jack McCarty sits at five-over for the tournament. McCarty posted a 74 in round one with birdies on holes 2, 14, and 16, and followed with a 75 in round two that included four additional birdies.

Sophomore Chance Rinkol is nine-over through 36 holes following rounds of 76 and 77. Rinkol recorded five total birdies on the day, including three on the front nine in round one.

Freshman Bennett Warren competed individually for the Hawkeyes and closed the day at four-over, opening with a 76 before responding with an even-par 72 in the afternoon.

Iowa also sits ahead of several Big Ten opponents, including Rutgers, No. 42 Northwestern, Indiana, and Michigan State, as well as No. 39 Cincinnati and in-state rival Iowa State.
