McCarty, Shellberg Earn Top-25 Finishes at Duck Invitational

The Iowa men’s golf team completed the first two rounds of the Duck Invitational on Monday at Eugene Country Club.

EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Iowa men’s golf team wrapped up play at the Duck Invitational on Tuesday at Eugene Country Club, finishing ninth overall. The Hawkeyes posted a final-round team score of 10-over-par to close the tournament at 29-over.

“The guys grinded and battled back after a disappointing first round. Yesterday’s second round was second best in the field and move us up quite a bit. We started strong today, turned with three guys under par but we gave them back," said head coach Tyler Stith. "We missed an opportunity to catch a few more teams but happy how we fought back."

Sophomore Ryan Shellberg carded a third-round 74 to finish at four-over for the event, leading the team and placing 18th overall. It marks his highest career finish, and he has now placed in the top 25 in all tournaments this spring. “It was another solid week for Ryan. He didn’t have his best ball-striking round, but he managed his game well. He continues to learn and get better each tournament,” said Stith.

Redshirt freshman Jack McCarty led Iowa in the final round, firing a two-under-par 69 to earn his first top-25 finish. He tallied six birdies on the day, with three on the front nine and three on the back. “I’m really happy for Jack. He was in total control of his game today. He hit it well, but when he was out of position, he played smart. He should be very proud of his performance,” said Stith.

Redshirt freshman Grant Gudgel recorded a 77 in the final round to finish at eight-over for the tournament, placing 32nd, while junior Max Tjoa posted a 74 in round three to close at 12-over.

Freshman Bennett Warren added a 77 in the final round, finishing at 19-over. Sophomore Chance Rinkol, competing individually, shot a final-round 79 to finish at 16-over.

“Eugene CC in this condition is a legit test of golf. Every shot gets your attention. Coach Martin (Oregon) said this is toughest he’s ever seen ECC play. The greens were rolling 13 plus and the pins were tucked. This was a great learning experience and will help us grow as a team," said Stith
