Hawkeyes Take 5th at Sarasota 2K

The University of Iowa rowing team placed fifth out of 19 teams competing at the Sarasota 2K.

SARASOTA, FLA. – The University of Iowa rowing team placed fifth out of 19 teams competing at the Sarasota 2K. Originally seeded seventh out of the 19 teams, Iowa advanced all five boats into the grand finals and finished fifth overall. Defending Benderson Cup champions, No. 14 UCF swept all boat classes in route to their second cup win.

RESULTS
The top five finishers were No. 14 UCF, No. 18 Miami, No. 20 UNC, No. 15 Dartmouth and Iowa.

“Our goal was to get all boats into the grand finals which we accomplished Friday. Today we took what we learned yesterday and went out and competed. I am so proud of this group and what they have accomplished. I would like to thank my seniors for their leadership which has really helped our younger team. Everyone showed up today and competed with a high level of intensity. We are really excited to get back to work on Monday and are looking forward to Tennessee next weekend!”

FINISHES
UCF took a slight advantage through the opening 500-meters, with Iowa staying connected to the third and fourth place boats. UCF stayed in the lead through the middle meters with Dartmouth slowly taking back seats. In the final sprints, Miami and UNC battled for a podium spot and Iowa raced hard through the finish line.

UNC and Miami took an early lead out of the opening strokes. As the Hawkeyes settled into the race, they remained connected to the leaders. UCF took the lead at the 1000-meter mark with an open water lead over Iowa, but the Hawkeyes stayed connected to second and third place. In the final 250-meters, Iowa pushed to the finish but could not catch UNC securing a fourth-place finish.

Through the opening meters, the field remained connected, no crew finding much separation. At the 1000-meter mark, UCF took the lead with Iowa staying connected to third place Dartmouth. The Hawkeyes increased their rate toward the end of the race trying to take seats on Dartmouth. The leaders laid down a final sprint in the last 250-meters which gave them an open water lead, with Iowa crossing the finish line in fourth.

UCF and Dartmouth pulled out to an early lead with Iowa staying connected to the leaders through the first 500-meters. Toward the middle meters, UCF found an open water lead over the field with Iowa battling against Miami and Louisville for the third-place spot. In the final meters of the race, Miami was able to pull ahead, overtaking Dartmouth and the Hawkeyes finished strong coming in fourth.
