No. 45 Iowa Downs Purdue, 4-3

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The 45th-ranked University of Iowa women’s tennis team edged Purdue (6-9, 2-5), 4-3, on Sunday at the Schwartz Tennis Center. 

The win moves Iowa’s record to 9-10 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten action.  It was the Hawkeyes’ fifth 4-3 victory this season.

Iowa opened the match by securing the doubles point. At No. 3, Nikita Vishwase and Pia Kranholdt defeated Ashlie Wilson and Emmi Kolyskzo, 6-3. Tereza Dejnozkova and Emma Tothová secured the point for the Hawkeyes with a 6-3 victory over Kathryn Wilson and Fatima Gutierrez on court two.

The remaining match on court one was left unfinished, with Iowa securing the point. Ece Gencer and Ida Clement led No. 28 Mia Mack and Daianne Hayashida, 4-3.

The Boilermakers fought back in singles, tying the match at one on court five, where Kathryn Wilson defeated Vishwase, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 6, Kranholdt added a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Kolyszko. Dejnozkova extended the Hawkeyes lead to two, defeating Gutierrez 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 on court three.

Purdue responded with Kayal Gownder edging Tothová, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 on court four, while Clement defeated Hayashida 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2.

The Hawkeyes clinched the match on court one, where No. 57 Mack rallied for a 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-1 victory over Gencer.
