IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Loras, 10-0, in seven innings on Wednesday evening at Duane Banks Field.
Iowa broke open the game with four runs in the second inning. After Kellen Strohmeyer singled to right-center, Jaixen Frost plated Strohmeyer with a bases-loaded walk. Gable Mitchell followed with a three-run double, scoring Max Burt, Jaixen Frost and Jaylen Ziegler.
The Hawkeyes used back-to-back doubles from Mitch Wood and Joey Nerat to add one run in the third inning.
“That’s one of the positives to getting back home,” said head coach Rick Heller. “We can settle back into our routine, and I think it gives us a chance to get guys right. Mitch Wood gave us a big night tonight, he had a great game, and so did Joey. Jaixen Frost took some better swings tonight, which was good to see.”
Iowa added three more runs in the fifth inning. Caleb Wulf led off with a walk, and Strohmeyer followed with a single up the middle. Wood then hit a three-run home run, scoring Wulf and Strohmeyer.
Mitchell led the Hawkeyes with three hits and four RBIs on the night.
Iowa’s pitching staff held the Duhawks scoreless on two hits across seven innings. Brady Ferguson got the start, allowing no runs and recording two strikeouts in the first inning. Carter Wilcox followed with two scoreless innings, tallying two strikeouts and earning the win.
Iowa used four additional pitchers in the scheduled bullpen game: Beau Leisure, Cole Moore, Brolan Frost and Ganon Archer.
“I was really pleased to see Ganon Archer, Beau Leisure and Brolan Frost get back out there,” said Heller. “I thought they looked really confident and solid, with one-two-three innings.”
