IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa golf team sits in first place after two rounds of the 32nd Hawkeye Invitational. Sophomore Ryan Shellberg paced the field after day one, shooting 13-under through two rounds.
Shellberg opened with a six-under 66, highlighted by four straight birdies to start his round. The Prosper, Texas, native recorded 17 of 18 holes at par or better with seven total birdies. He carried that momentum into the second round, where he carded a career-best seven-under par 65 (previous best 67), a round that ranks 10th in program history and featured five consecutive birdies on the back nine and nine birdies overall.
Redshirt freshman Jack McCarty sits in the top five after shooting three-under par 69 with all but one hole at par or better in the second round. He opened with a one-over round, finishing one-under on the back nine before building on that in round two.
Redshirt freshman Grant Gudgel shot five-over in the first round before bouncing back with a three-under 69 in round two, landing in the top 20. He tied for Iowa’s second-best scorer in the second round, recording five total birdies.
Sophomore Chance Rinkol sits at four-over after rounds of one-over in the first round, carding 16 of 18 holes at par or better, and a three-over par in the second. Junior Max Tjoa finished both rounds at three-over par to finish the day six-over par.
Freshman Bennett Warren competed individually, shooting a three-over 75 in the opening round and a two-over 74 in the second round.
