IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa men’s golf team claimed the team title at the 32nd Hawkeye Invitational, finishing 13-under par (851) as a group. Sophomore Ryan Shellberg captured individual medalist honors, carding 10-under par (206).
"I’m extremely proud of how the team handled the lead overnight. Southern Illinois played great early in the round but we didn’t panic, we continued to played our game, and pulled away on the back nine. This championship was a team effort," said head coach Tyler Stith. "Shelly carried the team yesterday but we had several guys step up with clutch performances out there today. Jack had a career best finish and Grant battled from +5 after 5 holes to finish the tournament at -1."
It marks Iowa’s first team championship since the 2023 Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course (April 15, 2023). Shellberg becomes the program’s 17th Hawkeye Invitational individual champion and the first since Mac McClear at the ANF Classic on Sept. 6, 2023.
"Ryan’s performance yesterday was remarkable," said Stith. "I didn’t see -13 out there in those conditions. It was one of the best 36 holes of golf in program history. He gave himself a seven shot lead and did an enough today to grind out the win."
Redshirt freshman Jack McCarty posted his best career finish, placing fourth at four-under par (212) after a final-round 2-under 70. The Solon, Iowa native shot par or better in 17 of 18 holes in the third round.
Redshirt freshman Grant Gudgel led the way in round three, shooting three-under par with three birdies and an eagle. He finished sixth overall at one-under 215.
Junior Max Tjoa shot his best round of the tournament at even par in the final round to finish 25th at six-over par. Sophomore Chance Rinkol shot three-over in round three to finish seven-over overall.
Freshman Bennett Warren, competing individually, closed the tournament at 5-over in the final round.
Since 2019, Iowa has now won the Hawkeye Invitational four times (2019, 2021, 2023, 2026), and the Hawkeyes have claimed 18 of the tournament’s 32 all-time editions dating back to 1970.
