COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th-seeded University of Iowa women’s tennis team fell to sixth-seeded Wisconsin, 4-1, in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday night at the Auer Tennis Complex in Columbus, Ohio.
Wisconsin (17-6, 10-4) came out strong, securing the doubles point. On court one, No. 87 Maria Sholokhova and Ekaterina Ivanova defeated Tereza Dejnozkova and Emma Tothová, 6-1. In the deciding match at No. 2, Ellison Reynoldson and Kaja Jacobson edged Daianne Hayashida and Sally Xu, 6-3.
The remaining match on court three was left unfinished, with the Badgers securing the point. Tianna Rangan and Kaede Usui led Nikita Vishwase and Pia Kranholdt, 5-3.
In singles action, the Badgers extended its lead to 3-0 with two straight-set victories. At No. 5, Usui downed Xu, 6-3, 6-1. On court two, No. 68 Ivanova added a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hayashida.
Iowa secured its lone point of the match on court four, where Kranholdt edged Reynoldson, 6-4, 7-6(5).
Wisconsin clinched the match on court six, where Jacobson defeated Bex in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
The remaining two matches were left unfinished with Wisconsin clinching the deciding point. Dejnozkova was tied with No. 20 Sholokhova 7-6(2), 4-6, while Vishwase was in a 5-7, 6-1, 1-1 battle with Rangan.
The Hawkeyes finish the season with an 12-14 overall record.
