Hawkeyes Fall in Doubleheader Against No. 4 Nebraska

The University of Iowa softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader Saturday against No. 4 Nebraska at Bowlin Stadium. The Hawkeyes fell 9-1 in six innings in Game 1 and 5-2 in Game 2.

LINCOLN, Neb. – The University of Iowa softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader Saturday against No. 4 Nebraska at Bowlin Stadium. The Hawkeyes fell 9-1 in six innings in Game 1 and 5-2 in Game 2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One  

In the first inning, Devin Simon reached on a hit by pitch and advanced to third on a double down the third-base line by Tory Bennett. Simon scored to give Iowa an early 1-0 lead.

Nebraska responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Cornhuskers added three more in the second when a bases-loaded hit cleared the bases to extend their lead to 6-1.

Nebraska added another run in the third inning and secured the 9-1 run-rule victory in the sixth with consecutive RBI singles.

Game Two

Iowa struck first in the opening inning. Bennett and Kiara Sipe reached base in consecutive at-bats and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Mariah Myers drove in both runners with a single down the left-field line to give the Hawkeyes a 2-0 lead.

Nebraska answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game, then took the lead with another two-run inning in the second.

The Cornhuskers extended their lead to 5-2 in the third inning on an RBI single, accounting for the final run of the game.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH STACY MAY-JOHNSON
“We gave ourselves a chance in Game 2; they were just a little better than us today,” head coach Stacy May-Johnson said. “Offensively, there are things we can do to give ourselves a better shot. We have to play our best ball to beat this team, but I think we can do it. Our pitchers gave us a great chance in both games, and we’ll get another crack at them tomorrow.”

NOTABLES
• Myers went 1 for 3 with two RBIs in Game 2.
Serayah Neiss recorded her third complete game of the season and is eight strikeouts away from 400 for her career.
